If you’re hiring a babysitter for your first baby, your most important concern will probably be “How many newborn babies have you cared for?” If the answer is “None,” you are probably not going to hire that babysitter. The same is true for hiring anyone. There are one or two things that are most important. In business, it’s helpful to try to find their biggest “pain point,” or business problem they need you to solve. Figure that out, and it will help you deliver a very clear message that you’re a great person to solve it for them. Be careful not to assume, or take things at face value. A friend of mine hired career counselors for his outplacement team, and he can’t stand counselors who don’t put notes in the system. Figuring that out as you talk to him can make or break your chances of getting the job.
